What a rare find! Beautiful, antique, doorknob plate (escutcheon) made by, "Sargent & Co." of New Haven, CT during the 1920's. It's made of solid, heavy, thick, cast bronze, not stamped or plated iron. The plate has 2 holes: upper hole for doorbell and bottom hole for knob. The 2nd to last photo shows one of these knobs (not available for sale).
The plate was salvaged from the historic "Stevens Hotel" in Chicago, IL. The hotel was built in 1927, cost $30 million to build, and was the largest hotel in the world at that time.
The plate is embellished with a lovely wreath pattern. The lovely details are enhanced by a subtle patina. If you want a brilliant shine, all you'll need is some "Brasso," #0000 steel wood, and a little elbow grease.
The plate is in great condition with only a few nicks and scratches here and there. Otherwise, there are no breaks, cracks, dents, or deep scratches.
When the hotel was renovated in 1985, many of these parts were available. Now, these parts rarely surface, and when they do, they go quickly! Whether you are installing the plate in your home, or adding it to your collection; an antique piece of hardware with such radiant beauty and of such fine quality construction is a great investment, which will only increase in value!
