Beautiful, antique student desks salvaged from Northeastern PA. The gentleman we bought them from said that they were his grandmother's.

They were made by, "Columbia Manufacturing Inc." of Piqua Ohio sometime during the late 1800's or early 1900's. These desks are both marked with the Number 4. The top, backrest, and seat are made of oak and the legs are made of cast iron. The desks were mounted onto 2 boards in order to protect their legs from getting damaged when being slid or dragged.

If you are wondering how you sit and access the writing top, you don't. These desks were fastened to the floor back to back. The writing table attached to your desk was actually for the student behind you and you used the table of the student in front of you.

The top has a hole called an, "ink well." There is also a grove along the back edge which is used to store pencils. There is a short, open compartment underneath used to store books, paper, rulers, and other supplies.

Considering their age, they are in superb condition! You could tell that they were well taken care of over the years. The black paint of the cast iron is clean and bright (not dull and faded) and the even the original stain and finish of the wood in really good shape. Expect the usual nicks and scratches, but no breaks, cracks, chips, or dents. The desks are strong, sturdy, and ready for another lifetime of service!
